Top Experiences in Rishikesh and Tehri Lake
1. Experience River Rafting in Rishikesh
Rishikesh is one of India's best-known destinations for river rafting on the Ganges. The experience offers a combination of flowing rapids, riverside scenery, and adventure. Choose a suitable rafting stretch according to your experience level and the operator's safety recommendations. Rafting availability depends on seasonal conditions and local regulations.
2. Enjoy Water Adventures at Tehri Lake
Tehri Lake, formed by the Tehri Dam, is a popular destination for water-based recreation and scenic escapes. Depending on current operations, visitors may find boating, kayaking, jet skiing, or other organised activities. The surrounding mountains and expansive reservoir also make it an appealing place for photography and relaxed sightseeing.
3. Explore Rishikesh's Spiritual Side
Beyond adventure sports, Rishikesh has a distinctive spiritual atmosphere. Visit Triveni Ghat to experience the evening Ganga Aarti, walk across Ram Jhula and Lakshman Jhula's surrounding areas, or explore local ashrams. These experiences offer a different perspective on the destination beyond its reputation for adventure.
Shopping in Rishikesh and Tehri Lake
Shopping in these destinations is more about discovering local culture and useful travel finds than visiting large shopping malls.
In Rishikesh, browse markets for rudraksha beads, prayer accessories, incense, yoga-related products, cotton clothing, and handmade souvenirs. You may also find locally produced teas, small handicrafts, and decorative items inspired by Indian spiritual traditions. Compare quality and prices before buying, particularly for items sold as authentic rudraksha or other speciality products.
Around Tehri and nearby local markets, look for regional woollens, simple handicrafts, packaged local food products, and souvenirs made by local artisans. Shopping options may be more limited near the lake itself, so plan your purchases around established market areas rather than expecting extensive retail facilities at every sightseeing stop.
Things to Know Before Travelling
A little preparation can make your Rishikesh and Tehri Lake adventure more comfortable.
Choose the right season: Spring and autumn are often pleasant for sightseeing and outdoor activities. Summer can be suitable for a mountain getaway, while monsoon weather may cause road disruptions and affect water activities.
Check activity availability: River rafting and lake sports depend on weather, water conditions, safety restrictions, and local operating schedules. Confirm before travelling.
Pack appropriately: Carry comfortable walking shoes, quick-drying clothes for water activities, sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, and a light jacket for cooler evenings.
Follow safety instructions: Use approved activity operators, wear the required safety equipment, and follow the guidance of trained instructors. Avoid entering restricted water areas.
Plan your transfers: Rishikesh and Tehri Lake are separate destinations, and mountain roads can make travel slower than expected. Allow enough time for transfers and sightseeing.
Respect local customs: Dress appropriately when visiting temples and ashrams, follow photography rules, and avoid littering near rivers and the lake.
Carry essential payments: Keep some cash for small shops, local purchases, and places where digital payment facilities may be limited.
